Dr. Wei Xie is the Co-Founder and CTO of Shenzhen ZH Energy Storage Technology Co.,(ZH Energy), a global leader in key materials and equipment for flow battery technologies.
Dr. Xie holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Materials Science & Engineering from Tsinghua University (China) and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin (the U.S.). With nearly two decades of expertise in electrochemical energy storage, he began his pioneering research on non-fluorinated ion exchange membranes in 2006. He is the author of 20+ SCI journal papers and holds 30+ granted patents worldwide (US & China).
Prior to founding ZH Energy, Dr. Xie served as the Flow Battery Project Leader at United Technologies Corporation (UTC), the largest fuel cell and flow battery company in the US at the time. He led two ARPA-E projects on flow batteries funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. Notably, his leadership in developing high-power-density vanadium flow batteries earned the prestigious R&D 100 Award in 2013. His innovations were subsequently licensed to establish Vionx Energy, which became a leading utility-scale flow battery manufacturer in the United States.
Since founding ZH Energy in 2021, Dr. Xie has focused on eliminating the prohibitive upfront cost barrier holding back widespread flow battery adoption. ZH Energy operates as the flow battery sector’s dedicated infrastructure partner to deliver a mature, cost-optimized product ecosystem that allows flow battery companies worldwide to skip redundant R&D, accelerate time-to-market, and focus on their core innovations and application scenarios. The portfolio includes proprietary low-cost non-fluorinated ion exchange membranes, high-power stacks, standardized flow battery modular systems, and fully integrated R&D/scale-up testing equipment, all validated through customers from 20+ countries.
